コロナ禍に端を発したリモートワークの急速な普及により、企業のnetworkの在り方が変化している。ガートナーは、クラウド時代の新たなフレームワークとして、networkとSecurityを統一的に提供するSASE（Secure Access Service Edge）を2019年に提唱した。SASEを実現するために、networkの面で中核となる製品の1つが、ソフトウェアで定義された広域networkを指す「SD-WAN（Software Defined WAN）」である。ここでは、企業がビジネスを推進する上で、今後重要性を増すSD-WANについて、ガートナーの最新の調査結果などを交えて動向を紹介する。

＜目次＞SD-WAN（Software Defined-Wide Area Network）とは、ソフトウェアで仮想的に定義する広域network、もしくはそれを実装するためのテクノロジーや製品のこと。従来、networkを構成するものとして、ルーター、スイッチ、サーバー、ストレージなどのhardwareが存在しており、それぞれを制御する必要があり、複雑だった。これらをソフトウェアで一元的に制御できるようにする技術がSDN（Software Defined Networking）であり、SDNの範囲をローカルエリアだけでなく、より広域なnetworkであるWANに広げるのがSD-WANである。SD-WANを利用することにより、ソフトウェアでnetwork接続を制御し、通信や回線への負荷を軽くできることや、遠隔地に出向いて機器の設定作業をする必要がないこと、またトラフィックの監視環境を統一できるために運用コストを減らせるといったメリットがある。また、SD-WANで実施できる主要機能の1つで忘れてはいけないのが「インターネットブレイクアウト」である。インターネットにアクセスする特定の通信を、ほかの通信とは異なるゲートウェイ経由にする機能だ。テレワークの普及などでインターネットに接続する拠点が増加し、トラフィック量が増大する中、企業が持つnetworkへのトラフィックやVPN環境がひっ迫している。インターネットブレイクアウトにより、影響を小さくできるのである。調査会社のガートナーは9月20日、SD-WANと関わりの深いWANエッジインフラストラクチャに関する調査結果「Gartner Magic Quadrant for WAN Edge Infrastructure」の2021年版を発表した。リーダーとして選定されたのは、ヴイエムウェア、フォーティネット、Versa Networks、パロアルトnetworkス、シスコシステムズ、HPE（Aruba & Silver Peak）の6社だった。リーダー企業について、強みと注意点に関する記述を中心に紹介する。| リーダー | チャレンジャー | ニッチプレイヤー |
