Background of the shift to 14-inch
Dynabook has been using 13-inch as the standard for mobile PCs for many years, but the new dynabook RJ74 adopts 14-inch. Yuichi Koga of Dynabook talks about this background as follows.
“Over the past two years, we have started working from home and remote work due to the corona crisis, and the amount of time we spend using PCs not only on the go or on business trips, but also at home has increased. We have received requests such as '13-inch is a little big and 15-inch is too big'." (Mr. Koga)
Therefore, we pursued a frameless design and realized a 14-inch compact body that is almost the same size as the conventional 13-inch notebook PC. In addition, the weight is expected to be less than 1 kg.
The CPU is equipped with the latest 12th generation Intel Core processor. As a device to demonstrate the performance of the CPU, the TDP (thermal design power) is designed to handle a maximum of 28W. Mr. Koga says, "Empower technology enables us to deliver high-performance computing."
If you put a load on the CPU, it will generate more heat, and the inside of the laptop will become hot. The dynabook RJ74 ensures sustained CPU performance through high-density mounting technology and a cooling fan that effectively dissipates internal heat.
And the frameless design is a design in which the size of the LCD screen and the main body are almost the same. As the bezel of the LCD screen becomes narrower, the space for installing a web camera is limited, but the dynabook RJ74 uses a newly developed ultra-compact web camera. Surprisingly, the width of the camera module is only 2.2mm.
The liquid crystal display has become slightly longer in "vertical". The aspect ratio has changed from 16:9 to 16:10. Mr. Koga says, "More information can be displayed in the vertical direction. It can be used effectively when using applications such as Excel and Teams." It also has a function to suppress blue light.
Mr. Koga said, "I want you to fix (complete) your work with just this one (dynabook RJ74). That's why we have all the interfaces." is equipped with a wired LAN connector. Although the spread of Wi-Fi has reduced the use of wired LANs, Mr. Koga says, "For example, companies that handle important confidential information still use wired LANs."
In order to increase robustness, we plan to conduct tests that comply with MIL standards. At the end, he concluded, "We developed this PC with a focus on ease of use and design as the best PC for the hybrid era."
Design
Shinya Sekimoto of Dynabook explained the design aspects of the dynabook RJ74. Due to hybrid work, notebook PCs have come to be taken out in various situations. Therefore, it seems that they considered a color variation that does not fit in the conventional black and gray.
"We had a lot of discussions about colors, such as plain white and luxurious gold. We chose Dark Tech Blue, which is conscious of formality, because we target a wide range of users and also from the viewpoint of usability." Mr. Sekimoto)
By configuring it with one large “R” (curved line), it is designed to be easy to carry. We also considered the ease of putting in and out of the bag. One of the features of the dynabook RJ74 is its narrow bezel, making it easier for users to concentrate on the screen. With this in mind, the dynabook logo on the lower bezel is kept as inconspicuous as possible. Mr. Sekimoto explained, "While working on the PC, it should not cause unnecessary noise."
Similarly, I was particular about the design of the hinge. In the previous product, separate silver parts were put on both sides, but the same color is put together to create a sense of unity.

Excellent camera app
Atsushi Watanabe of Dynabook introduces three apps and functions that support online meetings. (1) AI noise canceller that removes noise during meetings, (2) one-touch microphone mute that quickly switches the microphone mute function by key operation, (3) AI camera effector that uses AI for camera effects. With these, we will solve problems such as the house being reflected in the background and the own face appearing dark. A feature of AI technology is that the effects can be used regardless of the conference application.
Finally, Mr. Watanabe emphasized that the dynabook RJ74 is a mobile notebook PC that is ideal for hybrid work, saying, "Now that online meetings and telework are widespread, smooth communication is important."
